This page contains a short description of each category of mandatory spending listed in the Updated Summary Tables (FY2010) [4], including a link to the administration that is in charge of handling each service. All named categories are arranged in alphabetical order.

Medicaid

Medicaid is available to some low-income families who need assistance in paying for medical care. This program works with healthcare providers and makes payments directly to them, not to the patient. The amount paid by Medicaid is dependent on the individual's income, age and possible disability, among other factors. [1]



Medicare

Medicare is a health insurance program that is available to those who are over the age of 65, to those under 65 and have a certain disabilities, and to those of any age who are currently experiencing permanant kidney failure. This government program helps the patient to cover hospital insurance, medical insurance and prescription drugs. [2]



Social Security

Social Security is a government program that distributes tax dollars to people who can collect retirement, disability and survivor benefits. Those who are allowed to collect retirement benefits are generally at least 65 years of age. Disability can be collected at any age. Family members who survive a dead relative, such as widows and children, may also receive benefits. [3]
